Community Spotlight on … Downtown MIAMI
By josephine on Aug. 13, 2008.
| Downtown Miami, a glittering jewel that pulsates with commercial, cultural, and leisure activities, reflects its brilliance onto Biscayne Bay. Skyscrapers with innovative architecture, historic shopping arcades, department stores, restaurants, and tourist attractions offer big-city cosmopolitan flair and a wide variety of styles for every taste. | |
| Public transportation in the Downtown area is a vital part of the Downtown life. Many of Downtown Miami’s major office buildings, hotels, and retail centers, the Stephen P. Clark Government Center, area museums, and the Brickell business district are linked by a small, free, automated train system, the Metromover, that serves just the Downtown Miami area from Omni to Brickell, but also connects to Metrorail, Miami’s raised train system, at Government Center and Brickell stations to go beyond downtown as far as Dadeland to the South. Also, the main bus station in Downtown is located at the Metromover/Metorail Omni Station.
Downtown places of interest include Bayfront Park, which is a popular venue for concerts, political gatherings, holiday happenings (like 4th of July fireworks), festivals, cultural events, civic celebrations, religious services, or just a restful place for Miamians and visitors of all ages to enjoy sunbathing or a nice picnic. Next to that is Bayside Marketplace, a popular mall and marina. (the roof is visible in the lower left-hand corner of the first photo). Next comes the American Airlines Arena (home of the Miami Heat) (the white circular building in the middle right of the third photo). Lastly, on the bayfront is Bicentennial Park, the possible much-debated future site of a new baseball stadium. Once a strictly business and shopping area, thanks to the increase in residential constructions, Downtown Miami is transforming into the ideal city of tomorrow. With year-round beautiful weather and every amenity in close range, the sun-and-fun lifestyle calls to people from all over the world. The new Opera, Ballet, and Performing Arts Center, the explosion of the art and design scene, the appeal of the celebrity-studded nightlife on nearby South Beach, the laid-back lazy days on the gorgeous, wide, white sand beaches of Miami Beach and Key Biscayne, all within easy reach of Downtown Miami, is truly transforming the city into a bustling, urban metropolis. |
